HOMEBUYERS forked out a record [pounds sterling]1billion in stamp duty between April and June, despite a rise in the 'free' threshold, research has revealed.

The figure is nearly [pounds sterling]230million more than was paid out during the previous three months - a 30 per cent jump.

It works out as an average of [pounds sterling]3,800 for each housebuyer.

Yet it comes after the Government claimed to be doing its best to help people avoid the tax.

Two years ago, the threshold for paying stamp duty was raised from a purchase price of [pounds sterling]60,000 to [pounds sterling]120,000.
