Vests that protect their wearers against the twin threats of bullets and knives have been developed in a cooperative effort.
The vests combine two established technologies:
* DSM's high-performance polyethylene fibre (Dyneema[R]) provides ballistic protection;
* Bekaert's steel cord (Steelskin[R]) gives the wearer stab protection.
A combination of these two materials offers body armour manufacturers the chance to make dual-protection vests that are as lighter in weight than any of their competitors offering the same class of defence, according to DSM Dyneema.
