The scope, richness, and complexity of Richard Wagner's legacy as dramatist, composer, polemicist, and cultural icon defy the capacity of any one scholar to absorb and comprehend all of the strands that emanate from him. Recognizing this fact, the respective editors of the Wagner Handbook and The Wagner Compendium have attempted to build up a comprehensive picture of Wagner through contributions from scholars representing a number of disciplines.
