In Hard Bop, the poet and critic David Rosenthal sets out to investigate important trends in the jazz of the 1950s and 1960s. Such an inquiry is of particular relevance just now, for the language of hard bop has enjoyed a notable revival in recent years, serving as the point of departure for the "neo-classical" movement led by Wynton Marsalis, Terence Blanchard, Marcus Roberts, and others.
Rosenthal casts a wide net in this account. His subtitle suggests that hard bop was primarily a phenomenon of the decade 1955--1965, and while this perhaps serves in general terms, it would be easy to cite numerous significant recorded documents that fall outside those limits. ...
