It is a pleasure to read an engagingly written, succinct introduction to Central-Javanese gamelan. So often readers with a new interest in the subject are subjected to either tantilizing but factually empty descriptions of gamelan music as the enchanting tones that waft gently over palace walls at dusk; or, conversely, to densely composed analyses of the minutiae of Central-Javanese gamelan music written by and for academics. It has long been the case that Jennifer Lindsay's book, in its first edition (1979), has been the only source to which instructors may send interested novices.
