Sep. 7--DECATUR -- Even 10 years ago, it was extremely uncommon to hear reports of Staphylococcus aureus being passed around by a football or baseball team of school-age children, but with the frequent sharing of equipment and practice jerseys, this is no longer the case.
"We've definitely seen an increase, with patients coming in with skin infections later to be found as a staph infection," said Tracy Cox, infection control coordinator for St. Mary's Hospital. "We see a lot of people coming in who think they just have a bug bite or a spider bite, but it's really a small boil. A spider bite that causes an infection is pretty rare." ...
