THE National Parks (Scotland) Act 2000 was an early assertion of the Scottish Executive's intent to redress the perceived deficit with respect to the designation of national parks in Scotland. While mooted in Scotland, national parks were not put into effect in the late 1940s as they were in England. Attention was drawn to the particular landed and political interests in Scotland which militated against such a designation. Moreover, the population, access and landscape pressures differed from those that prevailed in England and Wales. Instead, the development pressures of forestry and skiing, for example, turned attention to landscape conservation. (1)
