Baltimore orioles have a strong homing instinct and often return year after year to nest in the same yard and even the same tree. It is the bird's custom to build a new nest each year, even though the old nest might appear well-preserved for two or three years after being built. The olive and yellow females are the architects and nest builders. Bird nests are used only for rearing young, and the nests are not used after about July 1.
