Set in the lower Rio Grande Valley of southcentral New Mexico, Elephant Butte Lake State Park is the largest and most popular state park in New Mexico. Elephant Butte Reservoir, created by a dam constructed in 1916 across the Rio Grande, is 40 miles long with more that 200 miles of shoreline. The 36,000 surface-acre reservoir offers a vast array of water sports, including boating, fishing and waterskiing. The park has over 200 camping and picnicking sites. There are three developed boat ramps on the lake, along with concession-operated marinas and stores.
