In 1982, Curran and Stanworth argued that, for a variety of reasons, the number of small businesses in operation in Britain was likely to increase at least to the end of the decade (1982: 16-25). This prediction has proved absolutely accurate, especially as far as the number of self-employed businessmen in the United Kingdom is concerned.
