I ALWAYS GET A SURPRISING RESPONSE when I tell people that a runner is out when struck by a batted ball while standing on a base. Maybe I should say that he's "usually" out since there are different scenarios when a runner can be hit by a batted ball and not be called out when standing on a base.
Take what happened at Fenway Park on June 20 when the Red Sox and Nationals hooked up in an inter-league game.
Early in the contest Boston's Kevin Youkilis hit a slow roller up the third base line. Nationals' third baseman Ryan Zimmerman followed the ball up the line hoping it would go foul.
