A federal judge struck a blow to a first-of-its-kind law in Maryland that would have required large businesses to do their fair share in supporting health care coverage, threatening similar laws that are being considered around the nation. Supporters, however, are confident the Maryland law will be upheld on appeal.
In mid-July, U.S. District Judge J. Frederick Motz ruled that Maryland's "Fair Share Health Care Fund Act," which became law in January, is pre-empted by a federal health care benefits law, effectively invalidating the Maryland law.
