Sep. 11--The other day at Yankee Stadium, Detroit manager Jim Leyland gave umpires an earful during the seventh-inning break. Then Kate Smith's "God Bless America" blared over the loudspeaker, and Leyland interrupted his case to stand at attention. When Smith's final "home, sweet home" had sounded, Leyland went back about his business, and soon enough the umps dispatched him to the clubhouse.
