Car antilock brakes are impressive performers on the test track. They prevent vehicle wheels from locking, decrease the distance required to stop, and improve drivers' control of their vehicles during emergency braking on surfaces that are wet and slippery.
What will surprise a lot of people is that antilocks are not reducing either the frequency or the cost of on-the-road crashes that result in insurance claims for vehicle damage. This is the case despite the obvious benefits of antilock brakes in test situations.
