Moriah Scott had just entered sixth grade when her mom, Diane, lost her job. Diane had been working at a fast-food restaurant near where they live in Asheville, North Carolina. It took Diane two months to find work again. Money got tight for their family, which includes Moriah's little sister, Sarah. For a while, they had to rely on food stamps to eat.
It was a tough time, yet Moriah, who is now 14, says the situation helped her understand something important about her mom. "She's a single parent and all of us depend on her," the teenager tells Choices. "She makes sure that we have everything we need, and she puts her needs behind ours."
