Sep. 12--SAN ANDREAS -- The Mother Lode's ugliest Gold Rush town may soon get some help. Merchants in San Andreas are teaming with highway officials to find ways to beautify the highway that destroyed much of the town's historic heart and possibly even find a way to divert logging trucks and other heavy traffic around the town center. San Andreas has a whole lot of historic charm: homes built in the 1880s with rare rose varieties climbing their back fences, a marble-faced courthouse built in 1893 and stone buildings from the 1850s with iron fire shutters.
