PITTSBURGH _ Ben Sheets is a perfectionist.
And the Milwaukee Brewers right-hander nearly reached that level in Game 2 of a doubleheader against the Pittsburgh Pirates on Wednesday at PNC Park.
Sheets retired the first 18 Pirates hitters, flirting with a perfect game before allowing a leadoff single to Chris Duffy in the seventh inning. Ryan Doumit then spoiled Sheets' shutout with a home run in the eighth, but the Brewers held on for a 2-1 victory to avoid a series sweep.
The teams split the twin bill after the Pirates won the opener, 6-3, behind right-hander Ian Snell.
