A s it approaches its ninth national congress, Cosatu faces the most debilitating leadership crisis in its 20-year history.

The situation has degenerated into a free-for-all between those who support the federation's president, Willie Madisha, on the one hand, and those who support general secretary Zwelinzima Vavi on the other. Insults have been traded, labels hurled at opponents and embarrassing personal information about top leaders laid bare for all to know.

The question many have been asking is: What triggered the leadership crisis and why has it turned so vitriolic, particularly between the two leaders?
