A collection of essays by diverse hands always presents some problems for the reviewer. In the best of circumstances the essays will be of equal quality and will focus so tightly on the topic that the reviewer will be able to discuss the work as a whole and also identify particular essays. In less fortunate circumstances the essays are uneven and the reviewer must try to distinguish what is particularly valuable among the essays.
