Sep. 14--Jack Knuepfer got into Elmhurst politics in the 1950s because his basement flooded, but over the next four decades he became a leader of regional scope who played a key role in shaping DuPage County into its present-day form. "Jack was a visionary," said Ken Lahner, who was county comptroller when Knuepfer was DuPage County Board chairman. "He had ideas, and he spent his time getting things done for DuPage County and for the whole region." Knuepfer, 85, died Wednesday in Elmhurst Memorial Hospital.
