During his one-day visit to Brussels on 14 September, Ukrainian Prime Minister Viktor Yanukovich confirmed his solid commitment to step up efforts to bring Ukraine closer to the EU. The new head of the Ukrainian government clearly stated, however, that the county was not yet ready for NATO membership.
Nominated by President Viktor Yushchenko, a strong supporter of Ukraine's unification with western Europe through its accession to the EU and NATO, Yanukovich made it clear that the country is not yet ready to execute NATO's membership action plan.
