"The state flower of West Virginia is the satellite dish." West Virginians tell that joke on themselves: They are acutely aware of the state's reputation as a cultural backwater, its hollers peopled by Hatfields and McCoys running one step ahead of the revenuers. Some of that reputation is rooted in historical fact, but there is another, underappreciated West Virginia of charming lore and a startling natural beauty carved by its primeval Appalachian rivers.
