For 77 days, staff at Mayo Eugenio Litta Children's Hospital were looking for an unusual kind of road map: a road map of life for Isabelle and Abbigail Carlsen.
Drawing one took dozens of people working together, bouncing ideas off each other and repeatedly refining what they knew.
Thousands of scans were taken with the ultimate goal of creating the most detailed anatomical models possible. Along the way, surgeons needed drawings that would put the girls' anatomy into perspective.
That's where medical illustrators came into the picture.
