Sep. 16--MEDICAL ILLUSTRATION The surgeons who separated conjoined twins Abby and Belle Carlsen had a secret weapon for their complex task: Artists and imaging specialists. Medical illustrators, radiologists and other specialists used information from thousands of medical scans to create drawings, 3-D pictures and computer animations. The idea was to give surgeons a clear picture of the girl's organs. The images created for medical reasons packed a strong emotional punch.
