Sep. 17--Federal health authorities last night advised consumers not to eat any fresh spinach as their investigation continued into the cause of a bacterial outbreak that has caught the nation off guard.
The advisory was extended beyond packaged spinach because "certain retailers and restaurants may take large bags of prepackaged spinach and put them into containers," said Dr. David Acheson, chief medical officer in the FDA's Center for Food Safety. He also said the number of people affected by the outbreak grew from 94 on Friday to 102 yesterday. One person, a 77-year-old woman in Wisconsin, has died. Acheson said it is likely ...
