Sep. 17--SALINAS, Calif. -- In "the Salad Bowl of America," ripened spinach colors the land a brilliant green, but no one dares touch the floppy leaves for thousands of acres. Farmhands are idled, and growers worry about the millions of dollars lost to the past week's deadly E. coli outbreak. On Saturday, federal health officials advised against eating any fresh spinach--whether prepackaged or loose--because of fears of E. coli contamination.
