In its author's words, this is a "preliminary" study of "Brunei ruling-elite ideology, ... but with no intensive reference to social and political impact". The "foundations of the study were laid between mid-1989 and mid-1990" and "the study was completed, at a diplomatic distance from the action, in the later months of 1991". Who the author is and the conditions under which he or she conducted the study are nowhere explained. Internal evidence suggests that the author had first-hand experience with Brunei and/or very close contacts with people who do have an intimate knowledge of Brunei affairs.
