Semaian started in 1989 as a new monograph series published by the Department of Languages and Cultures of Southeast Asia and Oceania at Leiden University. The issue under review is the third of the six publications which have appeared so far. It contains five short articles in which the authors expound their research agendas for the 1990s for their respective fields. In spite of its title, most of the attention is, not surprisingly, directed towards Indonesia with a particular emphasis on the humanities and social sciences.
