PLANS to build a motorway from Bizerte to Tunis should literally pave the way for the transformation of the sleepy port city. "It will make Bizerte a suburb of Tunis," Bizerte province governor Mohamed Soudani says enthusiastically.
The 60 kilometres of motorway will cut the once arduous journey to about 25 minutes. And Bizerte is greeting the opportunity with a string of initiatives: a free zone to encourage investment in manufacturing and services, a major office development called Bizerte Centre, three new four-star hotels on Bizerte's corniche, and port development at Bizerte, Menzel Bourguiba, Sidi Mechreg and Ghar el-Meleh.
