One morning a while back, as the hosts of the "Today" show fulminated on the Zen of cream cheese, Mary E. Youngs, of Lowville, found herself talking to the TV.
"They were saying, "The label says Philadelphia, so it must be made in Philadelphia,"' recalls Youngs, 61. "I remember thinking, "Somebody's got to tell them. Lowville is the place for cream cheese!"
Today, in an unprecedented deluge of civic pride and calories, residents of the Lewis County village of Lowville plan to celebrate the gentle, velvety spread that for generations has put food - well, mostly bagels - on their dinner tables.
