THE HISTORY OF ISLAM stretches from the 7th century to the present day and encompasses an area from Spain to Indonesia, North Africa to China. Of the 193 recognised countries of the modern world, more than 50 are of the Muslim faith, with a total population of 1.3bn. This equates to almost 19% of the world's entire population and covers some 22% of the earth's surface. Quite a feat then to attempt to chart Islamic art and architecture through the ages but that is what Iranian born Professor Nasser D. Khalili has successfully achieved with the publication of his epic work The Timeline History of Islamic Art & Architecture.
