Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution will convene two special conferences this fall to learn from the devastating 2004 tsunami that left more than 220,000 people dead or missing. In July, another tsunami in the same region killed several hundred people and displaced more than 50,000 others.
The first conference, open to the public, offers a forum to hear firsthand accounts from United Nations hazard management officials and scientists who responded to the tsunami and to discuss ways to improve the effectiveness of warning systems, emergency response, and hazard management planning for coastal natural disasters.
