Baruch Goldstein, a Jew from Brooklyn, burst into the mosque at Hebron Feb. 25, massacred about 30 Muslims and wounded many others. The tradegy both stirs ancient memories and provokes new possibilities.
Hebron boasts the Tomb of the Patriarchs. Here, about 4,000 years old, is the first recorded land contract. Abraham, his wife, Sarah, and many of their offspring were buried here. The area's tumultuous history since then symbolizes the antagonisms that have divided Jew from Christian and Muslim from both. Yet they can all speak with St. Paul of "following the example of the faith our Father Abraham had" (Romans 4:12).
