Sep. 19--Years ago, the chairmen of American Motors Corp. and International Harvester Co. were spotted lunching in the Equitable Building in Chicago, where Harvester was headquartered. That set the city abuzz with a rumor that the two companies were going to merge. A phone call revealed that the two were brothers-in-law, having family chitchat over lunch. It's gotten to the point in Detroit that if rival executives are at the same restaurant, church or ballgame, the media turns its thoughts to merger or acquisition, not a meal, worship or relaxation.
