Article: AGRICULTURE : BLUE TONGUE DISEASE: TOO EARLY TO EASE SURVEILLANCE.(Brief article)

Most of the EU agriculture ministers flatly refused Belgium's request, at the Council of 18 September, for an easing of the embargo on areas affected by blue tongue disease. Authorising trade in ruminants destined for slaughter from the surveillance areas to virus-free areas in other member states is "premature," according to France, reports a Community source. The southern European countries adopted the same stance, having themselves already had to comply with an embargo during previous outbreaks of the disease in their territory. The Netherlands and Luxembourg were the only states to lend their support to Belgium.
