Sep. 19--SAN BERNARDINO -- Cal State San Bernardino President Albert K. Karnig outlined on Monday the challenges and triumphs of a university still "near infancy" in its development, despite turning 40 years old in May.

Among the challenges is serving an area where fewer than 30 percent of high-school graduates take courses that would qualify them for admission to a state university.

"As a result, many students come poorly prepared and not socialized to the expectations of higher education," Karnig said during his annual Convocation at the Santos Manuel Student Union.
