Bottom-dump haulers are normally either a three-axle tractor/trailer combination or the more-specialised twin-axle rigid machines. Their most common mining use is in coal hauling and their application is normally where long hauls are involved and gradients are low. The main advantage over rear-dump trucks is that they offer high capacity with low truck loading heights, thus allowing a greater number of loading options. Another advantage results from the difference in materials that bottom-dump haulers are expected to carry. Rear-dump trucks are of more rugged construction and thus weigh more relative to payload.
