Breakfast may help prevent chronic disease, says Dr. Walter Willett, chair of the department of nutrition at the Harvard School of Public Health. That's because more frequent smaller meals (including breakfast) are less likely to produce high peaks of glucose and insulin in the blood, which in the long run can damage the pancreas and increase diabetes risk.In addition, breakfast fuels the brain, helping it perform better, says David Benton, a professor in the department of psychology at Swansea University in Wales.
