MOST people called him The Duke. But there I was another title which he rather liked. It came from a caption to a photograph in the French racing magazine Le Weekend. It was some time in January 1968, when David and I and Stan Mellor were riding down at Cagnes Sur Mer because of foot and mouth disease up here.

The photograph showed The Duke towering above a bunch of diminutive French pilots, and the caption read: "David Nicholson - surement Le Plus Grand Jockey Du Monde" - "surely the greatest jockey in the world".
