This special issue presents a selection of papers from the second conference on the theme of "Queer People: Negotiations and Expressions of Homosexuality, 1580-1850," held at Christ's College, Cambridge in 2004. In our introduction to the collection of essays derived from the first Queer People conference, we argued that the debate between history and theory, or between essentialism and social constructionism, which has so often characterized work in the history of sexuality, including the history of literary representation, is ultimately based on a false opposition.
