The tarpaulin is usually associated with shelter making. A year ago in this space we focused on that very emphasis, also discussing preferred tarp sizes and materials. But a good tarp has many other survival uses apart from shelter.
TARPS AND WATER
The most commonly used modern tarpaulins are made of light-weight reinforced polyethylene, usually in 10-foot squares or 8x10-foot rectangles or larger. The best are laminated for strength and flexibility, have corner and side grommets, and are both wind- and waterproof. The aspect of being waterproof immediately suggests a number of important survival uses.
