FREDERICK TAYLOR searched for the one best way to do the job with his measures and stopwatches. But there may not be only one best way. In a flexible world, by definition, there are many ways, and many trade-offs between them. Which is best depends on what you value. The same is true of possible responses to new technology. Agility, virtual enterprises and the like provide a range of choices all of which may be correct for some, but not for others.
