Physicists at the world's most powerful atom smasher have found direct evidence of a subatomic particle that they believe is the final building block of the material world.
It is the last of 12 subatomic particles that they think everything is made of, and they call it ``the top quark.''
Following a 17-year-long search involving hundreds of millions of dollars, a team of 440 scientists at the Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory in Illinois said Tuesday that, after analyzing the debris of almost a trillion collisions between subatomic particles, it had found strong evidence for the elusive quark.
