Sep. 22--BEIJING -- The Japan unit of U.S. consumer products group Procter & Gamble Co. said Friday it is halting the sales of SK-II cosmetics products in mainland China, following Chinese reports that substances banned in China were found in some of the items.

The company said in a statement posted on its website that it is temporarily pulling the high-end beauty brand products from Chinese stores due to the "confusion among consumers in China" that followed reports that chromium and neodymium were found in them.

The company's China unit is "working closely with government authorities to calm the situation," the statement said.
