CUERNAVACA, Mexico -- A cartoon in the March 26 issue of Mexico's prestigious daily, La Jornada, showed "Mexico" nervously following "Death" across a tightrope. For many Mexicans, the cartoon loudly spoke their feelings that chaos was but a step away.
The March 23 assassination in Tijuana of Luis Donaldo Colosio, popular presidential candidate of the ruling PRI, the Institutional Revolutionary Party, moved the nation a step closer to becoming ungovernable. In the wake of his death, old political alliances crumbled, financial markets gyrated and the peace dialogue between government officials and the rebel Zapatistas in the southern state of Chiapas faltered.
