Sep. 24--BLACKSBURG -- That generous early-season rope is now taut around Virginia Tech's neck. The next time the Hokies combine poor blocking, ill-timed and brain-dead penalties, turnovers and the occasional defensive lapse, the price will be severe.

Saturday's 29-13 victory over Cincinnati marked the fourth time in as many games that Tech's sins went unpunished. No surprise, really. Northeastern, North Carolina and Duke are certifiably awful, and Cincinnati's lone victory is over Division I-AA Eastern Kentucky.
