The advertising war between American Express and Visa, played out most recently during television breaks in the Winter Olympic Games, descended at times into low comedy.

In a classic case of "We said, they said," Visa during the Lillehammer games accused American Express of "ambush marketing" - an attack against Visa's exclusive Olympic sponsorship rights. American Express countered by saying Visa's advertising misled consumers.
