Q: I plan to start receiving my Social Security retirement benefits in about two years. I have a 13-year-old daughter from a previous marriage who lives with her mother, my ex-wife. Can my daughter get any kind of benefits based on my earnings record? And, if so, would the checks go to her directly, or would I get them on her behalf?

A: Once you start receiving Social Security retirement benefits, your daughter can get benefits as your dependent until she's 18, or 19 if still in secondary school.
