WASHINGTON -- The National Research Council (NRC) has issued a split decision on the planning for oil and gas activity off the coast of Alaska's North Slope.
The independent council of scientists and engineers concluded that more knowledge is needed, but it did not imply that this must halt or even slow permitting for oil and gas activities.
The report, Environmental Information for Outer Continental Shelf Oil and Gas Decisions, was requested by Congress and released Wednesday by the NRC.
It confined itself to scientific questions, avoiding policy positions on whether any petroleum development should occur in Alaska.
