Benzoyl peroxide, which is the subject of Dr. Weinberg's recent article (J Drugs Dermatol, 2006;5(4):344-9), is a drug which we have also studied in the lab and in clinical practice. First, I commend Dr. Weinberg for charting actual comparisons of products against other known products. Publications comparing a product versus a placebo or vehicle base with no active ingredient often seem pointless.
The crystals of benzoyl peroxide are very difficult to dissolve. We have done so with toluene and by adding side chains to the molecule with the assistance of Doug Neckers, PhD. Dr. Weinberg suggests that it is dissolved in dimethyl isosorbide in his unlisted, mystery ...
